Celebrate World Bee Day, May 20th!

It's time to celebrate the unsung hero of our food chain, the bee! Nearly 90% of the world’s wild flowering plant species depend, entirely, or at least in part, on animal pollination, along with more than 75% of the world’s food crops and 35% of global agricultural land. Bees, along with other vital pollinators such as butterflies, bats, and hummingbirds, are under threat due to the use of pesticides and the loss of habitat.

So what can you do to help our pollinating friends?

  • planting a diverse set of native plants, which flower at different times of the year.
  • buying raw honey from local farmers.
  • participate in "No Mow May', leaving your lawn for pollinators for the month of May.
  • buying products from sustainable agricultural practices.
  • avoiding pesticides, fungicides or herbicides in our gardens.
  • protecting wild bee colonies when possible.
  • sponsoring a local community garden hive.
  • making a bee water fountain by leaving a water bowl outside or by using bee cups in containers throughout your garden. Change the water frequently to prevent mosquito larvae.
  • help by sustaining forest ecosystems.
  • raising awareness around us by sharing this information within our communities and networks. The decline of bees affects us all!
